Across the winding river, the home castle stands. Warm lights shining into the early evening. Seems many years ago, as a student, hitchhiking through Europe, I visited Koblenz in Germany, and travelled down the Rhine. I remember a curving river and a castle. It was a long time ago and yet here, it appears, lit up, as if the viewer is seeing a welcoming stately castle home. Castles were all over Scotland where I was born, and the ruins of castle and cathedral grounds are where I sometimes studied as a student at St. Andrews University, the remaining wall ruin a few feet high, creating a nice break against the wind coming in from the ocean. The castle motif is a repeating one in my work. You'd think I came from a noble lineage, but not so. Maybe in another life. Certainly in the paintings these castles feel very familiar. In Scotland all the castles and ruins were made of stone. I never gave that much thought until I came to America where such stone is absent. I loved the feel of the stone. Painted with many layers of acrylics on gallery-wrapped canvas. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
