Caroline In The City

This painting is based on a portrait of Mademoiselle Caroline Riviera by Ingres. It hangs in the Louvre along side portraits of her parents. She is quite the fashionable young lady and I have wondered what she would think of our modern cities if she could time travel. When I got the idea for this painting I made a trip to Toronto and photographed many buildings. Then I cut up the photos to create a collage background for Caroline. The fractured images hint at the way our perception of things shifts and changes as time passes. The painting is unframed but should fit a standard size frame.
