The trip through the Amazon was a grand adventure that ruined ordinary travel for me. We saw parrots and toucans and tarantulas and iridescent blue butterflies flitting in the clearings. One afternoon after we got settled in camp, one of our indian guides, Victor, watched me taking pictures of the Orinoco and the mountains in the distance. I could see his interest in the camera. When I handed it to him, he held it up to his eye, but backwards so that he was looking into the lens. I realized that this was someone who really hadn't been exposed to the outside world. I didn't know such places still existed, and I certainly never expected to find myself in such a place.
