I have a deep cultural and spiritual connection with my previous home. I feel most Spanish when I paint. There is something about painting that connects me to the history of Spain. Through the practice of my art making I am able to recall the encounters I had with art, architecture, monuments, or sacred places. From line and color patterns in Spanish tiles, decorative Moorish wall motif, gilded ornamentation in places of worship, to the painting of El Greco, Velazquez and Picasso, in the course of time one period of style superseded another, but particular features remained. There are formal qualities to Spanish art that I am interested in, that date back to prehistoric times, Romanesque, Gothic, Arabic and modern times. These qualities include, abstraction, angularity, pattern, fractious relations between forms, restricted color and a desire to turn immaterial illusions from material means. The use of these elements, in my own art making, link me to my heritage. The relationships between contrasting parts of the painting, when experienced together reference a cultural fusion that is expressed through abstraction.
